The Holy Shroud of Turin is an ancient burial cloth kept in the St. John the Baptist Cathedral of Turin since 1578. Speculation that this may be the burial garment of Jesus, the Shroud remains the object of scientific study and religious sentiment. The linen wrap which is 14’ 3” by 3’ 7”, survived a fire in the 1500’s marring the Shroud with burn marks and drippings of molten silver. The Shroud bears the distinct imprint of the body of a man crucified according to procedures remarkable like those used for the execution of Jesus. Forensic pathologists confirm the injuries sustained by this man include scourging, puncture wounds around the head, facial bruises, a stabbing in the chest, and piercing of the wrist areas just below the palms. The crux of the controversy involves the cause of the mysterious imprint which remains unexplained. Theories of the imprint’s origin include a bright flash of scorching light emanating from the Shroud victim’s body. For Christians who are intrigued by the Shroud, recent scientific study has failed to resolve the issue. |
