After breakfast, we motor southeast to the Shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury. St Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury refused to yield to a state that would harm the Church. In 1170 four assassins were dispatched to murder him in the cathedral. Soon thereafter, Canterbury Cathedral began to draw thousands of pilgrims eager to kneel before the martyred saint's tomb. The faithful contined to go on pilgrimage to Canterbury - the goal of the pilgrims in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales - well into the 16th century when King Henry VIII destroyed the shrine and all its relics. Rebuilt in all its original splendor and now the seat of the Anglican archbishop, Canterbury continues to draw pilgrims to the site of St Thomas' martyrdom.
